Senior housing plans

Over 60 people gathered on Tuesday December 9th to learn about Catholic Charities Housing Corporation’s (CHHC) proposed senior housing development on the campus of St. Vincent de Paul Church.  CHHC is proposing to build a 38-unit senior building on the underutilized land in the parking lot on the corner of West 135th Street and Berea Road, in the heart of the Bellaire-Puritas development Corporation’s Lorain Avenue planning area.

The building will be a 3-story building with a front entrance right on Lorain Avenue.  There will also be a rear entrance in the back of the building directly off the parking lot that will be designated for staff, residents and visitors of the senior building.  A green, patio area will also be located in the rear of the building.

The interior of the building will include 38 one and two-bedroom units on three floors.  The units will include full kitchens with new appliances, including dishwashers.  The building will be secure with a camera system and it will be highly energy-efficient and built to green building standards.

All seniors over the age of 55 who meet the income guidelines will be eligible to live in the building.

In order to complete this project, Catholic Charities is applying to the State of Ohio for tax credits to finance the project.  The application for this highly competitive process is due in February and the State should notify applicants by May as to whether or not they received the tax credits.  If Catholic Charities Housing Corporation receives the tax credits, they will move into a more extensive design phase prior to construction and more community meetings will be held at that time.  Construction will then hopefully be complete in 2017.
