West Park MyCom is sponsoring two new youth programs this summer on the eastern end of the neighborhood.
Progressive Arts Alliance will be offering a one week Hip Hop Camp at the Bellaire Gardens CMHA estate, located at 12502 Wanda Ave. West Park MyCom has been partnering with after-school and summer programs at CMHA’s Riverside Park Estates for many years, but few youth programs have been available to youth who living in the 60 family units at Bellaire Gardens. The Hip Hop Camp will introduce youth ages 11-17 who live at Bellaire Gardens and the surrounding community to the foundational skills of break dancing, MCing, DJing and graffiti art.
The camp takes place Monday July 11th– Friday July 15th 1:30-4:30pm and is free and open to the community. Space is limited and registration is required. Up to six youth who participate in the camp will be selected to participate in Progressive Arts Alliance’s 2-week RHAPSODY Hip Hop Summer Arts Camp at Playhouse Square in August.
Classrooms to Corporations will be offering a Networking Fundamentals course for teens at the West Park Community Coalition Computer Lab, located at 11897 Bellaire Rd. Taught by a Microsoft employee, this course will cover network infrastructure, hardware, protocol, and service. After completion of the course, students will be prepared to take the Microsoft Technology Associate Exam, which can open doors to a number of entry level IT jobs. Three graduates of this course are currently working full time in the IT department at the Cleveland Clinic. The class will be offered on Saturdays, June 25 – August 13 10:00am-1:00pm. Students must be entering their junior or senior year of high school in the fall, or be 2016 high school graduates. The program is free and limited to eight students.
