Al & B’s Barbecue expands service

article by Rachel Napolitano

Summertime means ribs for many people and Al & B’s Barbecue is now open 7 days a week, just in time.

Al has been running the place alone five days a week and brings 30 years of experience making ribs. He started when he was young with hands-on experience and by watching his uncle barbecuing. Then he worked for 10 years for a Cleveland friend’s family barbecue business of 50 years.

Finally, he has found someone “who does it justice, just like I do,” so now he can expand his business’s availability.

Al puts his own special seasonings on the meat and then slow-cooks them for 3-3.5 hours in what he calls a “smokey grill” method. By seasoning the meat, he is able to cater both to the dry and wet barbecue aficionados.

His favorite items are the ribs and wings, which are also the most ordered items, but they also serve a lot of Polish boys and fish. His ribs are pork spare ribs; a Polish boy is a sausage sandwich with slaw, French fries, and topped with barbecue sauce.

Al & B’s makes their own coleslaw, macaroni n’ cheese, baked beans, and greens, fresh every day.

Al, who formerly lived on Harold Avenue, says his favorite part of running the business is “having regular customers. Seeing the people smile once they have tasted the food, knowing they are satisfied when they got their money’s worth.” He continued about his passion, “making sure they’re satisfied… that’s part of the pay.”

Yelp, an online business review site, has many positive customer reviews of the restaurant. Meg H., a Yelp reviewer, commented: “Got fries with sauce, mac and cheese, a Polish Boy and a shoulder sammich with coleslaw. Everything was amazing. Meat tender, sausage crisp and juicy, coleslaw fresh, and sauce was bangin’. Service was great, too. I’ll be back soon (and often).”

Yelp reviewers’ most used adjective to describe the flavor of Al & B’s secret sauce is “tangy” and he is rated 4.5 out of 5 stars on the site.

The majority of his customers call in their order to 216-362-8601 and pick it up at 15115 Puritas Avenue.
